One of our favorite things about living on our six acres is having our own backyard trails along the back of the property.
Over the years, these trails have been used for everything from Power Wheels and bike rides to dog walks, pony strolls, and even go-cart adventures.
To make the trails even more fun, we added trail signs!

We’ve repainted or replaced them a few times over the years since the paint tends to fade and weather takes its toll.
We’ve now lived here for over 20 years, and we started putting up signs when our boys were just toddlers.
Repainting them has turned into a fun little tradition, especially since we often change out the names with a new theme.
At first, we used wildlife-inspired names like Deer Trail and Gopher Lane.
But these days, since most of the traffic is pony-related, we’ve switched to more horse-themed names like Bootstrap Trail and Blacksmith Road.
No matter the theme, naming and painting trail signs has always been a simple, creative way to add personality to our space—and it’s something we’ve all enjoyed over the years.
Want to Make Your Own? Here’s What You’ll Need:
Scrap wood (I use old pallet boards)
Craft paint in bright, fun colors
Paintbrushes
A post or tree to attach your sign to
A few screws or nails for mounting
Step-by-Step:
2. Add the name of your trail sign and let it dry.
3. Attach the sign to a tree or post along your trail.
It really is that simple!
Most of ours are just screwed right into tree trunks, easy and sturdy.
These little signs have been more than just decorations.
They became part of the boys’ childhood adventures.
If someone lost something out back, it was never just “somewhere by the woods”—it was “near Gopher Lane” or “over by Bird’s Nest Loop.”
It’s the kind of small project that adds so much heart to your space, and creates memories in the process.
